Biography:

Chuck is one of the named and founding partners of the firm, and he is our Senior Partner emeritus. For over 40 years, Chuck concentrated his practice primarily in the areas of insurance coverage, insurance defense, bad faith litigation, professional liability and catastrophic loss, and Chuck was instrumental in the growth and development of our current legal practice. Throughout the course of his distinguished legal career, Chuck tried over 500 cases to verdict, served numerous professional appointments, boards and associations, and received a multitude of professional awards, culminating in his election to the American College of Trial Lawyers, which only accepts for membership less than one percent of all trial lawyers in the country. Although officially retired, Chuck remains a valuable resource to the firm.<<For more biographical information>>>

Chuck is a lifelong resident of the Washington/Metropolitan area and a product of the Montgomery County public school system. At Bethesda Chevy Chase High School, he played football, basketball and golf and was captain of the golf team at Ohio Wesleyan University. After undergraduate school, he attended George Washington Law School and was graduated with honors in 1966.

Upon completion of law school, Chuck clerked for The Honorable Leonard P. Walsh in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He subsequently worked for his father's independent adjusting firm and began practicing law in 1969 with McCarthy & Wharton and is now the Senior Partner emeritus in the successor firm.

Chuck has been active in State and County Bars in Maryland and the District of Columbia, serving on the Executive, Judicial Selection, Administration of Justice, Social and Litigation Committees. He served on the Board of Governors of the Maryland State Bar and was President of the Montgomery County Bar Association in 1982-1983. Chuck was Vice-Chairman of the Trial Nominating Commission for Montgomery County from 1984 to 2000, and also served as one of two non-judicial members of the Circuit Court Differentiated Case Management Committee, which reviewed the Court administration system for civil cases. He is a permanent member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference.

Having specialized in trial and insurance coverage issues, Chuck has written and lectured throughout the area and participated in several national trial practice and coverage dispute seminars. He serves regularly as an arbiter in local ADR proceedings and has been a mediator for Montgomery County. Chuck has testified as an expert on trial standard-of-care issues and insurance coverage litigation. He is a member of DRI and IAAC.

In the past years, Chuck has been elected as a Fellow of the Maryland State and Montgomery County Bar Associations and, in 1996, received his highest honor, being elected as a Fellow of the College of the American College of Trial Lawyers. The College accepts for membership less than one percent of all trial lawyers.

On April 21, 1999, at a gala dinner held at Indian Springs Country Club in Silver Spring, Maryland, Chuck was honored with a "Century of Service Award." This special award was created by the Bar Association of Montgomery County to honor those attorneys and judges who have outstanding professional qualifications and accomplishments, as well as giving outstanding service to the legal profession and to the community on a voluntary basis. Chuck was one of 25 honorees chosen from the Bench and Bar to receive this unique award, and is one of only 16 living attorneys to be so honored.

While golf and football may be his first loves outside of the law, Chuck is a past Vice-President of the Wheaton Boys Club, was a two-time Director on the "Journal" Newspaper Soccer Tournament, and coached youth soccer for over ten years. He has previously been chosen to coach the Maryland State under 14 girls team in national competition and was the first to have a WAGS team from Montgomery County. He has coached, in their youth, two National Team players and his last girls’ team won championships in New York, North Carolina, New Jersey, and the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, sending nine players to college teams.
