Biography:
Rick is a principal member of the firm’s Commercial Litigation, Business Law and Personal Injury practice groups, and he works primarily in the areas of commercial litigation, insurance defense, insurance coverage, personal injury, toxic torts, products liability, construction litigation, business law and professional liability. Throughout the course of his career, Rick has handled hundreds of cases to resolution for a multitude of individual, institutional and commercial clients, including numerous jury and bench trials, administrative and arbitration hearings, and appellate proceedings primarily in the State and Federal courts of Maryland and the District of Columbia. Rick has also served numerous professional boards and associations, conducted training and continuing legal education seminars, and contributed to educational materials in the furtherance of education, professionalism and civility in the practice of law. <<For more biographical information>>>
Rick was born in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1966. He attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where he graduated with a degree in government in 1988. He then served as the Fiscal Legislative Liaison for the Governor of New Hampshire, before pursuing his law degree in Washington, DC. He attended the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University and graduated in 1993 with his juris doctor and a degree in Comparative and International Law.
Since 1993, Rick has concentrated his trial practice primarily in the areas of commercial litigation, civil rights claims, and serious personal injury cases, including wrongful death actions. He has successfully represented clients in complex business cases involving breach of contract, fraud and unfair trade practices. He has also handled numerous defamation and discrimination claims involving government entities. He has extensive experience working with insurance companies, handling insurance defense cases, providing insurance coverage opinions, and litigating declaratory judgment actions, which has proven invaluable in his personal injury and wrongful death practice.
Rick has focused his corporate practice primarily in the areas of business transactions, joint ventures, and real estate matters. Among other clients, he represents technology companies, manufacturers, retailers, distributors, insurance companies, financial institutions, and a number of property owners, developers, managers and security companies in a variety of capacities. He has been engaged to create new businesses, as well as to negotiate joint ventures between established companies. He is a certified Title Agent in Maryland, D.C., and Virginia, and is licensed to conduct real estate closings.
Rick is a member of the bar associations of Maryland, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia. He is also a member of the bar association for the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and for Montgomery County, Maryland. He has contributed to educational texts, including workbooks on discrimination, fair housing and insurance coverage, from which he has conducted professional workshops for insurance companies and their clients, including a number of greater Washington property management companies. He is a Justice of the Peace and a Notary Public, and has been a member of the Montgomery County Inn of Court, a group of experienced lawyers, judges, law professors and students promoting professionalism in trial practice.
Rick and his wife, Joy, who is also an attorney, have two daughters, Claire and Brooke, and they reside in Bethesda, Maryland. In his spare time, Rick is a reluctant runner, who enjoys golf, skiing and travel with his family.
